Hot topics: Voice Banking—What is it?

A current hot topic in the assistive technology arena is voice banking. Voice banking is the process of digitally saving your voice for future use on a speech generating device (SGD). Individuals who may lose their voice due to motor neuron disease or ALS can consider saving their voice before it is gone. This way, when they eventually lose their natural speaking voice, they can communicate on their SGD using a synthesized voice that sounds much like their own. […]

However, much more is going on when an eye tracking system “watches” your eyes. Yes, there’s more than meets the eyeHow the eyegaze edge tracks eye movements behind this fascinating technology, […]

Meet 5 Eyegaze Edge Users

Joe MartinFrom walking and driving to things we take for granted, like eating and entertaining ourselves, people with disabilities face challenges every day. Technology like our Eyegaze Edge can help people meet these challenges head-on. The Eyegaze Edge, an eye-controlled communication and control system, uses the pupil-center/corneal-reflection method to determine where the user is looking on the screen. Here’s how it works:

Medicare Changes Threaten Access to Assistive Technologies

Thanks to the Ice Bucket Challenge campaign’s viral popularity, awareness and donations for ALS have seen a surge that has greatly benefitted those who are living with this disease.

However, there is a new ALS issue which isn’t likely to go viral, but it will potentially affect thousands of people living with this disease and their families. Medicare is reviewing its policies for speech-generating devices; if certain changes are implemented, policy changes could keep many people with ALS from receiving the technology they need to communicate.

Assistive technologies, like […]

Eye-tracking Study Shows Whether Digital Billboards are Safe for Motorists

You know the billboards – the ones that actually catch your eye as you drive by, the moving, flashing, colorful displays created by digital billboards.

Not surprisingly, digital billboards have been shown to be more effective than their traditional, static counterparts. But what about safety? Since they are so eye-catching, do digital billboards pose a threat to drivers and passengers on U.S. highways?

The U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration (FHA) was determined to find out, so they issued a […]

Eye Gaze Gives Olympic Athletes a Competitive Edge

If you were flying through the air at high speeds, in below-freezing temperatures, and at great heights, where would you look? How would you prepare – within split seconds – a landing that will not only put points on the board and maybe a medal around your neck, but also will keep you from breaking your neck?

These are questions Olympic athletes face constantly, during the two-week competition in Sochi, and during the years of prep work that got them there. As you can imagine, vision plays a major role […]
