Environmental considerations for using the Eyegaze Edge

 
Ambient infrared light:

  • The Eyegaze Edge uses very low levels of infrared light - a single LED - to illuminate the eye and enable eye tracking to be accomplished. This amount of light represents about 20% of the maximum safe amount of infrared light shining on the retina, as determined by NIOSH safety standards in the US.


  • Common sources of infrared light are sunlight and incandescent light bulbs.  While the Eyegaze Edge operates effectively in an environment with incandescent lighting, it will not operate in direct sunlight at this time. Depending on how reflective the user's retina is, it may be possible to operate the Edge outdoors in a shaded area.
