LC Technologies entered into a collaborative
arrangement with a large school district in Pennsylvania
in 2001 in which the Eyegaze System is being used to assess
the reading abilities of various segments of the 7,200 member
student population.
After some initial pilot testing, a number
of ideas for a more long-range projects were proposed. In
order to make maximum use of the resources available within
the school district and the company, it was decided that
the project with the greatest potential payoff would be
a simple screening of new students entering the first grade
in one particular elementary school. The Eyegaze testing
would then continue with these same students during each
subsequent year through the sixth grade.
With a relatively low turnover rate of the
students of the district, and with an extensive set of remedial
reading programs in place throughout all the grades, this
type of project offers an excellent opportunity to build
student reading profiles and related growth curves from
the day the students enter the first grade until they complete
their elementary education. No study of this nature has
ever been done before. There are clearly unlimited benefits
associated with the ability to acquire reliable quantitative
information in a quick, non-interfering, and extremely cost-effective
manner, showing how students are progressing through the
developmental reading phase of their early education period.
LC Technologies may propose additional work
that could involve:
-
Verification and evaluation of student scanning ability including the
detection of key word, and verification and evaluation
of content comprehension.
-
Development of computer games for teaching reading skills with auditory
and icon/visual reward feedback for reading progress.
-
evaluations of students with severe disabilities and use of the eyegaze
system to augment the learning process.
